Lucas is 17 when his life at boarding school suddenly goes off the rails. With the help of his mother (Juliette Binoche) as well as his brother, who takes him to Paris and introduces him to life as an artist, Lucas attempts a new start. Director Christophe Honoré, known for melancholy romantic comedies, delivers actors’ cinema of the greatest intensity. The vibrant center is formed by Vincent Lacoste and Paul Kircher, playing brothers with very different sensibilities. Honoré masters like few others the challenge of bringing a family structure to life so that every facet evokes strong emotions. Whether it’s the mother’s unconditional love, the youngest son’s gay desire, or the elder’s detachment, everything locks together. The film is enhanced by an overwhelming soundtrack to sink into. Winner of the award for Best Leading Actor at San Sebastián.
