The story of the suicide of five sisters. Sofia Coppola’s debut feature made a lasting impression on the US cinema of the 1990s.

Five sisters suspended between dreams of longing and the dreary reality of conservative suburban life in the 1970s – this is what Sofia Coppola depicted in her extraordinary debut. The young women suffer under the care of their religious and overprotective parents, who barely allow them space to breathe. When one of the sisters takes her own life, it sets off a sinister chain reaction. Ed Lachmann’s cinematography, Nancy Steiner’s costumes, Air’s dreamy music and the five central performances make of ›The Virgin Suicides‹ a sublime melancholic film and a highlight of 1990s cinema.
