Shot in 1944 during the German occupation, ›Falbalas‹ is one of the most beautiful films ever made about the work of a fashion designer, as well as an invaluable document of its era.

Fashion designer Philippe Clarence has the world of Parisian high society at his feet. His clothes are considered the most beautiful in the city and he throws himself into designing new collections. However, his life spirals out of control when he falls in love with Micheline, the fiancée of a friend. Obsessed, he attempts to win her love. ›Falbalas‹ once again confirms Jacques Becker as a master of milieu studies that are at once precise and affectionate. Fittingly, the film still enjoys an excellent reputation in the fashion world, not least because Becker succeeds in portraying it with such verisimilitude. A highlight!

Director

Jacques Becker (1906-1960) began his career as an assistant to Jean Renoir. He made his first films while France was still under occupation during World War II. A recurring characteristic of his films is their precise milieu studies, as in ›Edouard et Caroline‹ (1951), ›Casque d’or‹ (1952) and ›Le Trou‹ (1960).
