Sally Potter’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel “Orlando” is a uniquely enigmatic work. Starring Tilda Swinton in the role of the androgynous poet.

The aristocrat Orlando lives in the court of Elizabeth I, Queen of England. Instead of indulging in ordinary court life, however, he seeks happiness as a writer and in a passionate affair with a Russian countess. In order to escape an increasingly persistent admirer, he leaves for Constantinople. There, one morning, he wakes up as a woman. Decades pass and Orlando is suddenly in 20th century England. ›Orlando‹ is a boundary-breaking work that transcends the confines of fixed gender roles and human identities. A masterpiece, not least because of the brilliant costume design by Sandy Powell.
