Our Centre Piece 2025

Exciting cinema from Canada: ›Mile End Kicks‹ by Chandler Levack

Rebellious, full of pop culture references and with a keen eye for power relations, Chandler Levack already stood out as an idiosyncratic, unmistakable voice in contemporary Canadian cinema with “I Like Movies” (2022). With “Mile End Kicks”, she builds on this success and sweeps us along with her! We are all the more delighted to be able to present her new film as Centre Piece.

In her latest film, the Canadian director semi-autobiographically processes her own experiences as a young music journalist. Euphoria star Barbie Ferreira shines in the lead role. Twenty-four-year-old Grace Pine (Ferreira) moves to Montréal with big plans but little money in her pocket. She wants to write a book about Alanis Morissette's album Jagged Little Pill. But reality gets in the way: amid parties and creative overconfidence, she befriends an up-and-coming indie band and falls in love with two of its members. Levack poignantly tells the story of the pursuit of self-fulfilment in the creative business – and the reality of life for young women in a male-dominated music scene.
