In Cinemas: ›Afternoons of Solitude‹
There is blood in the air: Albert Serra accompanies the ‘Messi of the Toreros’ in his new film
A radical portrait: the costumes and self-confident movements of the matador Roca Rey, the bull's run-up and turns, the shouts of the audience. Serra shows the corrida for what it is: a ritual, a blood-red dance on sand. At the centre are animal and man, two opponents who nevertheless form a choreographic unit. In long takes, we become spectators and silent witnesses to a performance in which death is certain at the end. In between, car journeys and hotel rooms. ›Afternoons of Solitude‹ balances between documentary and art film. And whether we perceive what we see as aesthetic or martial, or both, is up to us.
