An epic and emotional journey set against the backdrop of Pompeii
The Franco-Italian production ›La Gradiva‹ is our Centre Piece 2026
As our centrepiece, every year we select a film which, in our view, stands out as particularly outstanding in terms of its form and narrative from the current year’s crop of films. This year, we are presenting ›La Gradiva‹ to you. This spectacular directorial debut by the Tunisian-French director Marine Atlan was frenetically acclaimed by critics at Cannes and won the Grand Prix at the Semaine de la Critique.
In this emotionally gripping and visually striking coming-of-age story, Marine Atlan tells of a fateful school trip that will change the lives of everyone involved forever. Against the backdrop of Pompeii, bathed in golden light, Atlan – who has previously worked as a cinematographer – looks deep into the souls of her young protagonists. Set against the backdrop of the timeless marble statues and wall paintings, she explores the overwhelming intensity of youth and its transience on the cusp of adulthood. And she asks what it means when the prospects for the future, normally associated with youth, are suddenly called into question.
So you really don't want to miss this extraordinary film! See you in November at the 75th IFFMH!
