Panel: Zukunft deutscher Film

14.11.2026 18:00

In cooperation with Lichter Filmfest Frankfurt International

With our anniversary program “Imagine Futures!”, we are looking toward the future while reflecting on our festival’s rich tradition. That tradition is rooted in the films and filmmakers who have been guests at the IFFMH – from Truffaut, Szabó, Boorman, Wiseman, Hänsel, and Jarmusch to Winding Refn and Kulumbegashvili.

With figures such as Klaus Lemke, Roland Klick, Rudolf Thome, Alexander Kluge, Volker Schlöndorff, Edgar Reitz, Ula Stöckl, Straub/Huillet, Wim Wenders, Rosa von Praunheim, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Angela Schanelec, and Isabelle Stever, this rich tradition also extends to German cinema,

We are building on this tradition through such initiatives as our Cutting Edge Talent Camp for film school graduates. Henrika Kull, Anna Roller, Sara Summa, Sophie Linnenbaum, Benjamin Pfohl, Willy Hans, and more have developed their films here. They represent the future of German cinema. This year, no fewer than four films participating in our international competition were made by former participants of our Talent Camp.

In this panel discussion, we will talk with three leading experts about the future of German cinema, opportunities and challenges, what has proven successful, the changes that are possible, and those that are necessary.

The panelists:

Director Constanze Klaue: she received the First Steps Award for her graduation film ›Lychen 92‹. She became known to a wider audience with her first feature, ›Punching the World‹, which received the German Film Peace Prize “Die Brücke”, among other honors. Her next feature, ›Superbusen‹, is currently in postproduction.

Filmmaker Eva Trobisch: her debut feature, ›All Is Well‹, premiered in Locarno, where it won the award for Best First Feature. Her follow-up, ›Ivo‹, received the Heiner Carow Award in the Encounters section of the Berlinale, while ›Home Stories‹ competed in this year’s Berlinale Competition.

Moderation: Sophia Schiller (filmmaker, producer, and IFFMH program advisor)
