The dream of an independent life: a girl flees from home, grows up, threatens to lose herself. A rousing plea against prejudices.

Don't trust first impressions! As if 'You Resemble Me' were the best example of this axiom, Dina Amer's surprising debut begins like other films. The handheld camera gets up close and personal with Hasna and her little sister as they flee their abusive mother and make their own way on the streets of Paris. With its dynamic realism, this first part recalls the films of the Dardenne brothers and 'The Florida Project' by Sean Baker. But then it is not only Hasna who changes, becoming a young woman. The film itself questions everything: Dina Amer shows how different perspectives make the same story appear in a completely different light. And Hasna makes a momentous decision in order to survive in a world that doesn't want her. A fascinating film about trauma, identity and transformation.

Director

Dina Amer has worked as a journalist in the US for CNN, The New York Times and Vice. In 2011 she moved to Egypt, where she witnessed the Arab Spring, and produced the Oscar-nominated documentary 'Al Midan'. 'You Resemble Me' is her debut feature. Its producers include Spike Jonze and Spike Lee.
