A day in the labyrinth of Turkish local politics: Ercan Kesal's furious debut is a satire, a milieu study, and a thriller all packed into one. A peculiar, enlightening, and exciting delight.

Becoming the mayor of an Istanbul district should be easy for Dr. Kemal Guner, the wealthy owner of a private clinic. Especially since the head of the party promised to attend the election campaign gala he’s holding this evening. That he has little political experience shouldn’t matter. That his first potential supporter is already wrestling expensive favours from him? Inconsequential. Dr. Kemal, played by the director, is a wonderfully paradoxical character. His candidacy must have fallen into his lap. The greater the setbacks, the more doggedly he fights. And thus he rushes from one meeting to the next, attempts to satisfy all expectations, and even drags his ex wife into the whole affair. In this comical egg dance around political vanities, the personal dimension gradually takes up more space. A dynamic film whose full impact is only felt in retrospect.

Director

Ercan Kesal began his professional career as a doctor before appearing as an actor in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film Uzak in 2002. In 2013, he received the prize for Best Actor at the Istanbul Film Festival. You Know Him, his debut as a director, is adapted from his own novella.
