A farmer in the Italian mountains, religion, and a great mystery. Stylish and precise filmmaking whose soaring imagery opens the gate to the mystical.

No one resembles a true saint more than a false saint – this is the epigraph to this magnificently enigmatic film. In a small village in the Apennines, the uneventful daily life of the taciturn Marco is made up of regular church visits, monotonous work on his father’s farm and chaste meetings with his girlfriend. A few years ago, he dropped out of seminary. One day he meets Lazzaro, who works on a neighboring farm. From that moment on, Marco dedicates himself to bringing the unbaptized man closer to his own understanding of religion. This endeavor, however, lands Marco on a path that leads further and further away from conventional Catholic teaching. Finally, he makes a decision that no one would have expected – and the film opens the gate to the mystical.
