Haunting and excitingly different. With poignant vigor, the Nepali director Fidel Devkota paints a mystical portrait of his homeland in crisis.

A courier leaves the Kathmandu airport to drive a foreign shipment to a remote mountain village. On the way, he hears a strange story on the radio about a man who looks into his empty red suitcase and suddenly vanishes. Simultaneously, on a country road, a lone figure slowly makes his way towards the same mountain village, carrying a small red suitcase. - Through its unusual storytelling and wonderfully haunting atmosphere, ›The Red Suitcase‹ offers the viewer profound insight into another culture and challenges a Westernized understanding of the world. Made up of carefully composed static shots and embedded in the fog-shrouded landscape of Nepal, the film tells of the price of globalization and exerts a power that is as affecting as it is mystical.

Director

Fidel Devkota is a Nepali filmmaker and visual anthropologist. He holds degrees in both disciplines. His films, photographs and writings deal with spiritual, social and economic transformations in times of ecological and political change in Nepal.
