The trauma of the Holocaust. A victim closes himself off from the world. Rod Steiger’s devastating, virtuoso performance from the 1960s.

Jewish immigrant Sol Nazerman is a pawnbroker in New York. He lives a secluded life, coming off as reserved and dismissive. Traumatized by his horrific experiences in a concentration camp, he is haunted by unspeakably painful memories. He views the world with contempt. This perspective, however, begins to crumble after he witnesses a series of dramatic incidents. - Carried by the performance of Method actor Rod Steiger and by Sidney Lumet’s precise direction, ›The Pawnbroker‹ is considered a ground-breaking work. Its unsparing portrayal of a Holocaust experience challenged viewers and censors alike.
