A mass demonstration in Tbilisi doubles as the dramatic setting for a family conflict. When the protest escalates, it becomes a turning point in a young woman’s life.

Amidst the ongoing tensions with Russia, the family of 16-year-old Elene is as divided as the country, parts of which are under occupation. A mass pro-democracy demonstration in the Georgian capital leads to an ultimate confrontation. The members of the family must face the conflicts that threaten to tear them apart. As the streets transform into a battlefield for freedom, the escalating protest becomes a turning point in Elene’s life, forcing her to confront her own inner demons.

A drama about the inextricable connection between private and political history that gradually blurs the boundary between reality and fiction. What unites the two is the unwavering truth of political resistance and human self-assertion.

Director

The 39-year-old Georgian director and screenwriter Uta Beria describes ›Tear Gas‹ as an act of resistance in itself, given the intense institutional pressure and limited funding that marked the production. The film won the Youth Jury Award at the Locarno Film Festival. Beria’s first feature, ›Negative Numbers‹ (2019), received the EU Award for Human Rights in Cinema.
