The best way to live is in the present: in his 50th film, Claude Lelouch focuses on serene moments of old age and divine intervention.

The latest love roundelay by our guest of honor begins with fireworks. Claude Lelouch gives us a panoramic view of Paris, a city in uproar. While looking at the current political climate, he also looks back at his own work. The themes of the comedy are revealed in a hilarious confrontation between two policemen and Jesus: past vs. future opportunities, the joy vs. the curse of memory, duty vs. free choice. At the center of it all are three crooks, whom Jesus also met once upon a time, riding a taxi out of jail. Their friendship is one of the film’s beating hearts. The other is a love contrived out of friendship – the last love for a terminally ill man who thought he was finished with life. A film as free as the jazz that carries it along.
