Audience favorite in Sydney and Toronto, Best Direction Award in Cannes, and a multiple Oscar contender! A century-spanning epic about being gay in Spain.

At the height of the Spanish Civil War, a young man searching for his ideological and sexual identity initially finds himself caught between the opposing sides, and then enlisted in the Fascist army. An encounter with a captured officer draws him into a decades-spanning story revolving around longing and desire – as well as the poet Federico García Lorca. The acclaimed Spanish directing duo “Los Javis” bring together the fates of three young men, from the beginning of the Spanish dictatorship through the Civil War and into the present day. One of the most intense and moving cinematic experiences of the year. Featuring two icons of world cinema, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close.

Director

Javier Calvo was born in Murcia and Javier Ambrossi in Madrid, Spain. As “Los Javis”, they have worked together on the film ›Holy Camp!‹ (2017), the series ›Veneno‹ (2020–2023), and ›La Mesías‹, the first Spanish series to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. ›La Bola Negra‹ is considered a strong Oscar contender in several categories.
