Ghostly: Vicky Krieps shines in an artfully staged meditation on the act of saying goodbye.

A young woman apparently abandons her family, departing for the coast and driving across France in an old red AMC station wagon. Reality is fragile. Image and sound are increasingly at odds with each other, and the chronology is just as incongruous. In ‘Hold Me Tight', actor and director Mathieu Amalric, known among other things as a Bond villain, weaves together the themes of travelling and rebuilding, linking them with the help of musical leitmotifs. Vicky Krieps (‘Phantom Thread', ‘Das Boot', 'Bergman Island') delivers a haunting performance that fuels the ghostly atmosphere as well as the intense inner tension. As if conducting a symphony, Amalric orchestrates, arranges and modulates a complex polyphonic piece to create an unusual, touching and profoundly sad film.

Director

Mathieu Amalric, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1965, has won numerous awards as an actor, director and screenwriter, including a César for his performance in 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly' (2007) and in Cannes for directing 'Tournée' (2010). ‘Hold Me Tight' (2021) also premiered there.
