In his directorial debut, actor and writer Jacques Nolot adapts his own autobiographical story about returning to the village of his childhood.

›Hinterland‹ is the title of the film. And it’s where Agnès Godard’s camera follows Jacqui’s car (a self-portrait of Nolot) as he drives to visit his mother, who is dying. This reunion triggers diverse memories. The parallel montage of bullfighters and young rugby players, photographed up close as an inextricable human tangle, is a homoerotic fantasy from Jacqui’s youth. It shows why the people of the village considered him “different”. At the same time, this dance of bodies anticipates images from ›Beau travail‹, perhaps Godard’s most famous work.

Director

Jacques Nolot comes from Marciac, in Gascony. After a wild youth, in Paris he met Roland Barthes and got to know André Téchiné, with whom he collaborated as an actor and writer. As a director, he later expanded ›L’arrière pays‹ into a loose trilogy with ›Glowing Eyes‹ and ›Before I Forget‹.
