1992, a small town on the Black Sea coast, left behind by the upheavals of history. Georgia’s Oscar submission is an absurd yet affectionate portrait of a world thrown into disarray.

The Soviet Union has collapsed, but the prosperity everyone hoped for has yet to reach Guria. Corrupt police officers are part of everyday life, alongside wild shootouts and beauty pageants. At the center of it all is 45-year-old widower and hazelnut farmer Zuriko. His best friend, Gela, helps him through all of life’s ups and downs – including his search for a new wife, much to the dismay of Zuriko’s former mother-in-law. Then Maia, the new music teacher, arrives in the village.

With plenty of humor, Levan Koguashvili shows that even where life is most difficult, the greatest wealth can be found in community and in the stories people share.
