A social portrait without kitsch or false dreariness, Céline Sciamma’s third feature tells the story of a gang of girls in a Parisian banlieu.

Life in the Parisian banlieue is bleak for Marième: her older brother bosses her around at home, school is pure frustration, and the future doesn’t look any more promising. But one day she befriends a gang of girls who take every liberty they can get away with, which deeply impresses Marième. Once initiated into the gang, she is given a new name – Vic – and, most importantly, a different outfit. It seems to be the start of a new life. For this very consciously stylistic film, the director Céline Sciamma designed and selected all the costumes herself.
