No one suspects that he is pursuing a merciless plan of revenge. The directing duo have succeeded in making a remarkable contribution to the revenge and prison-film genre. They combine a precise character study with consistently suspenseful cinema that ends where a German drama must end: in the forest. The sepia-coloured images convey a melancholy that seems to come from deep within the broken hero. We are given a psychological profile of a driven man who cannot escape the workings of his own thoughts of revenge and who is ultimately crushed by them.
