Quiet empathy and delicate perception! You almost want to believe the world would be a better place if there were more films like this.

Here’s a deeply moving, meditative drama about human nature: twentysomething Haru works in a bookstore and one day meets Tsuyoshi, who is in his mid-forties and whose life she saved years earlier. Soon after, she sees the 40-year-old Yukiko and, worried about her, approaches her. After this encounter, the two women go looking for the sources of sounds that Haru’s late mother recorded on tape.

The lives of three people cross and briefly merge, while their past always resonates. A film that deals with the very simple, small things that make up our everyday life. The absence of any flashy elements is what makes it so special. We see multi-layered characters who are magnificently brought to life. In a warm atmosphere, ›Following the Sound‹ tells of the interconnectedness of all people. Wonderful.

Director

Kyoshi Sugita, born in 1977, has worked as an assistant director for Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Nobuhiro Suwa. In 2021, he was in competition at IFMMH with ›Haruhara-san’s Recorder‹. With this follow-up, he once again highlights his position as one of the most important voices in new Japanese auteur cinema.
