A deeply moving drama about love between two young men during World War I and the question of what it means to be brave. Winner of the Best Actor award at Cannes!

1916. Pierre has just arrived at the front and is determined to prove his courage. Francis is tasked with raising the spirits of his fellow soldiers through theatrical performances. When the two meet behind the lines, there is an immediate spark between them. As the violence gathers momentum all around them, the two men try to find ways to escape the brutality – even if only for a moment. Or perhaps longer?

Once again, director Lukas Dhont (›Close‹) delivers a masterful work of emotionally charged cinema. The force and beauty with which he upends the conventions of the war film must be seen to be believed.

Director

At the tender age of 35, Belgian director Lukas Dhont is already an award-winning filmmaker. His debut film, ›Girl‹, received the Caméra d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, while his second film, ›Close‹, won the Grand Prix and was nominated for an Oscar in 2023. The two lead actors of ›Coward‹ were awarded Best Actor at Cannes this year.
