From the Stone Age to the third millennium in the most famous match cut in film history. In Stanley Kubrick’s landmark work, past and future flow into one another.

In the year 2001, when a mysterious black monolith is discovered on the Moon, humans send a mission to the edge of the solar system. On board, alongside two astronauts, is the supercomputer HAL 9000. Shortly before reaching their destination, the supposedly infallible HAL begins to make strange decisions. While man and machine are locked in conflict, one of the astronauts embarks on a journey that defies the laws of time and space, and in its cinematic rapture eclipses everything that came before.

Stanley Kubrick’s visually and philosophically astounding vision of the future appeared over a year before the first Moon landing.

Director

Stanley Kubrick (1928–1999) is one of the most influential filmmakers of all time. His films span a wide range of genres, each in its own way exploring the possibilities and limits of cinema and, indeed, of what can be achieved through filmmaking. His stature is so immense that to this day the myth persists that he helped fake the US Moon landing on a sound stage.
