Zero Fucks Given

honoured with the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Award 2021

Emmanuel Marre, born in Cormeilles-en-Parisis in 1980, and Julie Lecoustre, born in Avignon in 1987, wrote the screenplay for Marre’s short documentary film ›D‘un château l'autre‹, which received the Pardino d’oro in Locarno in 2018.
›Zero Fucks Given‹ marks the first time that Marre and Lecoustre have directed together.

ZERO FUCKS GIVEN

Adèle Exarchopoulos, winner of the Palme d’Or for ›La vie d’Adèle‹, shines in this tragicomic character study of a flight attendant in free fall.

When Cassandra, a stewardess for a budget airline, takes off her uniform, her mask comes off as well. Stationed on Lanzarote between flights, she numbs the emptiness inside with alcohol, parties and Tinder dates. When Cassandra loses her job, she moves back in with her parents, but has to cope there with a traumatic experience. The directing duo succeed in examining a profession and creating a character study of almost documentary-like authenticity and immediacy.

The camera fixes relentlessly on Adèle Exarchopoulos as she interacts with genuine airline employees. Almost every shot belongs to her; she is the centrepiece of the film.

With disarming vulnerability, she plays the tragicomic version of a millennial who, in a world of hypercapitalism and digitalism, rushes back and forth like a nomad between inhospitable transit locations: uprooted, restless, in search of herself.
