Il Buco

awarded with the International Newcomer Award 2021

The winner in 2021 was the Italian director and screenwriter Michelangelo Frammartino. Already his film ›Le quattro volte‹‹ (2010) was about the natives of Calabria and established him as a permanent figure in European auteur cinema. His third feature film ›Il buco‹ (2021) premiered in Venice.

IL BUCO

Endless depths, majestic mountains and a curious donkey: Michelangelo Frammartino returns with a cinematic tour de force.

In 1961, a team of Italian speleologists sets out for southern Italy to explore one of the deepest caves in the world in an expedition lasting several days. Director Michelangelo Frammartino has now re-enacted this historic project, blurring the line between documentary observation and fictional staging as he descends into a sensuous realm. There is no need for dialogue here.

The cave and the magnificent landscape of Calabria take on the leading role. When the light from the headlamps cuts into the darkness at the right moment, we see the damp, blood-red walls of thecave in the depths. Above, the calls of a shepherd penetrate the endless expanse. Below, a brightly shining torch gradually dims to a faint glimmer. ›Il buco‹ is one of the biggest cinematic events of this season.
