From Burkina Faso to Jerusalem: Around the World with Festivals

Five festivals, five visions for cinema: On the occasion of 70 years of IFFMH, we celebrate the worldwide tradition of film festivals. The range of festivals is enormous, from a focus on genres, as in Sitges, which is dedicated to fantastic film, to regional focuses, as in Ouagadougou at Fespaco, the most important festival on the African continent. The Festival du nouveau cinéma in Montréal connects us with the search for new signatures, while the Jerusalem Film Festival cultivates a wonderfully eclectic pleasure in film culture. And with the Week of Criticism Berlin, we also welcome a festival that puts discussion at the centre.

We have invited the five festivals from Burkina Faso, Israel, Canada, Spain and Germany to each select a film for our programme and present it in person.
